About Pastor Dustin Shellenberg
Pastor Dustin’s great Grandparents immigrated to Canada almost 100 years ago from Ukraine and Germany in response to favorable farming opportunities and to escape the growing violence in both countries. His mother’s family settled in the prairie provinces, and father’s family in mainland BC. They all eventually moved to a little town called Waldheim in Sask. where his parents met, were married and promptly moved far away because it’s not a very exciting town. Pastor Dustin was born in Alberta, lived the majority of his life in Saskatchewan (Go Riders!) and now makes his home in Winnipeg with his spouse and 3 adult children.
He Completed his BA in Theology at Briercrest, and was ordained in the Free Methodist church in 2016. He is a geek, and gamer of both the tabletop and video variety and is quick with a pop culture or song lyric reference. He loves to weave theological conversations into current events, movies, video games and books whenever there's a chance.

Who we are as a Free Methodist Church in Canada
Crestview Park Free Methodist Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba is affiliated with the Free Methodist Church of Canada. The Free Methodist Church is a group of Christian congregations all across Canada that are committed to sharing the good news of faith in Jesus Christ and encouraging believers into a life of ongoing transformation that impacts our families, our communities and our nation. We are committed to practical living out our faith in love, the authority of the scriptures, and to the life of the Spirit. We seek to allow God to shape our whole lives - attitudes, thoughts and relationships. Free Methodists seek to help people find new life Christ and to live lives of goodness. We are committed to the biblical principle that all believers are participants in God's purposes. Our churches are eager to help people discover how they can know God and serve others in meaningful ways and so bring about transformation in our world. Free Methodist Church roots are deeply embedded in the spiritual awakening of 18th century England which gave rise to the Methodist movement. Today, the Free Methodist Church ministers in 70 countries around the world. |
The Free Methodist church was formed around a series of distinctives that are often expressed in "free" statements:
1. Free from Slavery - People were not allowed to be members of the Free Methodist church if they owned slaves. 2. Free from socioeconomic inequality - many churches of the times sold pews and reserved them for prominent families, the Free Methodists refused to do this and instead believed that rich and poor should sit together as equals. 3. Freedom of the Spirit - The Methodist churches at the time were very rigid in their structure and order. The Free Methodists believed the Spirit should be free to lead when it chose so made space for dynamics in service structure, order and function 4. Freedom from Secret Societies - In early American history, secret societies significantly influenced communities and placed divides of loyalty on people. Free Methodists believed their first loyalty was to God and the second was to their neighbour regardless of who they were or whether they were a member of a secret society or not. 5. Freedom to Lead - In Free Methodist churches leadership was shared between clergy and laity, and equally between men and women. Women were allowed to preach, teach and share leadership responsibilities at a time when it was not typically allowed. In Canada, we have recently created a series of "free" statements to take the spirit of these and apply them to our current time and place: 1. Free to follow God: We are all free to journey with God, as revealed through Jesus, who invites and empowers us to join Him on His mission to reconcile everyone and everything 2. Free to Experience Community: We are all free to enjoy gracious, authentic relationships with one another as the family of God, while practicing the ways of Jesus. 3. Free to Hope: We are all free to experience the deep love and peace of God, to live without fear or guilt, and to accept Jesus’ forgiving, healing, restoring, and transforming grace. 4. Free to Collaborate: We are all free to work, pray, learn, and partner with people, churches and organizations that are in harmony with our vision to see a healthy church within the reach of everyone in Canada and beyond. 5. Free to be Courageous: We are all free to follow God’s Spirit learning, innovating and exploring new territory for ministry in ways that make sense for our local context and mission 6. Free to Pursue Justice: We are all free to challenge racial and economic injustice, champion equality of opportunity for men and women, and advocate for the intrinsic worth and value of all people, living out the legacy of our movement. |
